Cemetery Records

To the left are all of the cemeteries currently listed in Aiken County gen web archives. I will be updating this list as information and time allows. If you have information on other cemteries I welcome your input in updating this site.

The Savannah River Site (SRS) has made historical documents available online for research transparency. Over 6,000 cemeteries were moved when the Federal Government Claimed the site in the late 1940's. The documents often contain before and after photos of disinterments and cemetery removals. People interred on ancestral lands were moved in newly developed or existing cemeteries in the surrounding areas. There still remains unmarked graves on SRS.

Find-A-Grave is a good place to start when searching for ancestor burial places. Be aware that not all burials listed on that site are actual mark graves. There are those who submit information as memorials and it is assumed the person is buried in a particular place. You may find the person is buried elsewhere.

Pine Lawn Memorial Gardens

"Established in 1852, the cemetery, now somewhat overgrown with weeds, was the only burial place for African-Americans in Aiken until the mid-20th Century. Its occupants represent a diverse range, including slaves, freedmen, business leaders, tradesmen, and paupers."
