 African-American
I'm trying to locate a African-American gentlemen, whom I only knew as Tate, from York that probably graduated from a predominately black high school in York around 1972, '73, or '74. Can any body please give me some leads? First—the name of high schools that were probably predominately black during those years. Secondly—the names of a few predominately black churches in York. This gentlemen came from a pretty large family of males and I understand they were quite popular in York's African-American community. I have no idea how large or small York is and how spread out the African-American communities are in that area, but any help you can render would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so very much. Glenda Ransom (GRanrock@aol.com)

CAMPTON, Family
My family immigrated from Ireland around 1810-12. It is believed that
they landed in Charleston, So. Car. because the oldest son, John C.
Campton, was listed as "born at sea, SC". Three other sons were listed
as born in So. Car. from 1815 to about 1830. The mother of the family
(Ann Campton) was listed as born in Ireland in 1790. I have no
information on the father of the family. Ann and her 4 sons moved to
Chester Co. where they were listed in the 1830 census (Ann as head of
household). Then Ann and 3 of the sons (John, Leroy, and William) moved
on to York County where they were listed in the 1840 and 1850 censuses.
One son, Leander, remained in Chester County and was listed in both
censuses there. Somewhere around 1856 to 1859, Ann and the three sons
moved on to Carroll County, TN where they remained. Ann died in 1863
and was buried at McLemoresville, TN. Two of the brothers, Leroy and
William purchased land in McLemoresville. The eldest son, John left TN
abt 1869 for Arkansas. John and his wife Jane Brinkley Campton, moved on
the Crawford County, Ark where they are listed in the 1870 and 1880
censuses. Following the1880 census, John is not listed again, but Jane
his wife is listed with my grandfather Charles Samuel Campton in the
1900 census of Scott County, Ark. After that, she is not mentioned
again. My grandfather, Charles Samuel, moved on into Olkahoma and
settled in Antlers around 1906. The family remained there until my
father who was born in 1917, moved to California.
My main interest is to find out who my gg grandfather was (who was
married to Ann Campton). Although I don't have any info that they were
in Cherokee County, it doesn't hurt to look.

CLARK, J.F.
On 20 July 1902 Julia A Cogdell (Cogdale) of Cleveland County,
NC married J F Clark of York County, SC.
His parents were listed as Mary Irvin, who was living, and William
Irvin, who was deceased. His age was listed as 35 years & Julia
was 19. October of 1918, Julia gave the information on Lawrence
Clark's (her son} death certificate. Apparently he died during
the flu epidemic which hit Cleveland County and was bured at
Zoar Baptist Church, in southern Shelby, just a few miles from
the SC line. But that is the last I have been able to find about
them. Julia was a twin. Her sister Biddie Cogdell McKee lived to
be 90 years old before dying in 1976. If anyone can give any
information on Julia, her husband J F or any children they may
have had I would be most appreciative.

GREEN, John
I am looking for information on the family of John and Nancy GREEN,
listed on the York County 1870 Census with children named,
James GREEN, born December 1859
Oliver H. GREEN, born September 27, 1862
Mary P. GREEN, born November 25, 1865and
Martha Ann GREEN.
This family later moved to Shelby County, AL.
John was Nancy's second husband. Story has it that her first husband
was named John GREEN also. I do know that his last name was GREEN but
I'm not 100% sure of his first name. Story also has it that Nancy's
maiden name was LOVELACE or LOVELESS, but I don't have any proof of that
either. The first John is my g-g-granddad. He and Nancy were
supposedly from North Carolina. He was wounded while in the war between
the states. He came home before dying of his wounds (around 1865.) The
first three children listed are his children.
This family may have been in York County all along. I just don't find
any trace of them prior to the 1870 Census. Some folks think that they
may have come from the Rutherford or Cleveland County area of NC, but
there is still no proof of that either.
Any help that could be given on this family would be greatly appreciated

was born in york county in the years ranging from 1810 to 1815.
I have found very conflicting information on his spouse and have
no information on his parents. Here is what I do have on him and
his children :
John Huskey 1810-????
Reuben Monroe Huskey; 1857-1923 Married Martha Ann Phillips
William Allen Huskey; 1868-1943 Married Martha Ruppe Greene
Sarah Elizabeth Huskey; 1873-1950 Married Wyatt Lipscomb Hill
Martha Ann Huskey: 1865-1910 Married John Jones
The Possible spouses for John Huskey are :
     Cynthia Minerva Greenleaf
     Martha Phillips
     Martha Green
I believe, but am not sure, that John had a brother named
James Allen Huskey, born around the same time frame,
also in York County. If you can help clear up John's spouse

I have been roaming around the York County pages trying to find an
appropriate place to put this but haven't come up with just the right
place. Maybe you can help. My husband descends from James Kirkpatrick
who is buried in the Bulloch Creek Cemetery. We visited the cemetery in
1994. Since that time we have talked to his cousins and mother and we
want to have a new headstone put on his grave. The VA will pay for the
headstone and we will pay the cost of placement. The rub is that I need
to find someone who will accept the headstone when it is shipped.
Obviously we don't want it shipped to Alaska. In addition I had hoped
that I would find a DAR/SAR chapter who would host a dedication
ceremony. This type of thing was done for one of my ancestors who is
buried in Oglethorpe county, GA. If you have any thoughts on how I can
get this going I will appreciate it. Sincerely, glydie@alaska.net

PATRICK, Family
I am trying to find the family of my 3rd great grandfather,
Elias Patrick, who said in the 1850 &1860 census that he
was born in South Carolina. His wife was Sarah b in NC
(given name not kown but could possibably be Hunnington).
The 1850 census shows Elias' age as 70, the 1860 census as
80, so he could have been born in 1775 or 1780. Have reasons
to believe he was from the York- Spartanburg County area.
By 1810-12 he was located in Linclon County, TN and moved
to Marshall County, AL in 1834. He and his family were
staunch members of the Primitive BaptIst Church which
began as Separates Baptist in Centeral North Carolina
in the 1750's and was strong in northwest South Carolina
in the late 1700's. Would like to talk with anyone having

I am looking for information on the James Stephenson family from York
Co., SC. James and Rosanna(h) Stephenson were married in 1784 in York
Co. Rosanna(h)'s maiden name is unknown at this time.
James had a brother David. Their father was William Stephenson of NC.
The father came from the Edgecombe Co., NC area. All of these
Stephenson's fought in the Revolutionary War. David remained and died
in York County.
James and Rosanna Stephenson's daughter married Samuel Boyd Patton in
1809 in Davidson County, Tennessee. Samuel was born in SC and was said
to have been orphaned. There are many Patton families out of York Co.,
and I thought you might just have some kind of court record that might
possibly list a guardianship record for Samuel.

STERLING, Silas C.

recorded as Silas "Stallings" in early South Carolina records. He married
Sarah Freeman (daughter of Christopher Freeman) about 1804. (I've never

Silas moved from York County, South Carolina in 1814. He first moved to
Franklin County, Tennessee; and then Blount County, Alabama by 1817 where
he remained for the rest of his life. Silas left an extensive record of
his service in the Revolutionary War through repeated pension applications
in Blount County, Alabama. However, I know very little about Silas and his
family back in South Carolina. If anyone is researching this line back in
