Elizabeth died in Spartanburg  County South Carolina, on 1 Feb 1909; she was 82.5 Buried in Holly Spring Baptist Church Cemetery Spartanburg South Carolina    .

 

Birth and death information taken from grave marker.  First seven children are found in 1860 census page 415.  Four children in 1850 census.

 

Died in SC insane hospital.

 

Obit:     J.B. Coley went to Holly Springs yesterday to attend the funeral of his grandmother, Mrs. Lizzie Staggs, who died in the Columbia asylum.  She was 83 years old.  She leaves ten children:  Mr. Nathan, William, Jesse, and Dave Staggs, and Misses Margaret and Nancy, of Holly Springs.  Mrs. Geo. Coley of Campobello, Mrs. Mary Clement and Mrs. Mollie Leonard of Reidville, SC, and Mr. Staggs of Texas.

       The body was laid to rest in the Holly Springs cemetery by the side of her husband, Mr. John Staggs, who died several years ago.

Elizabeth married John Staggs1. Born on 23 Oct 1817 in Spartanburg  County South Carolina. John died in Spartanburg  County South Carolina, on 14 Dec 1900; he was 83.5

  Margaret and  her sister Nancy were both committed to the state hospital at age 71.

Millie married Tom Leonard.

 

Tom Leonard and Louise Leonard (married to Jess Wheeler Staggs) were brother and sister.

 

47. John Ben Staggs (Elizabeth WHEELER2, Jesse G.1). Born on 25 Sep 1852. John Ben died in Kaufman North Texas Hospital For The Insane, on 10 Oct 1935; he was 83. Buried in Long Cemetery Hopkins Co Texas.

 

Went to Texas. With His Aunt Rachael Wheeler Gaines.

       Greer, Nov. 18 - Jessie W. Staggs, well known farmer of the Friendship community near here, died at his home late today.

       He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Vaughn, Wellford. and Mrs. Lilly Cooper, of Greer.  A brother, Glenn Staggs, of Texas, and a sister, Mrs. Millie Leonard, of Greer, also survive.

       Funeral services will be held from Holly Springs Baptist church Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock.   Further announcements will be made by John D. Wood, mortician.

Jesse  Wheeler married Louise Ellen Leonard1,24. Born on 5 Apr 1857. Louise Ellen died on 4 May 1959; she was 102.5

Died at age 33.

 

Ann married Unknown Nichols.

50. David C. Or G? Staggs (Elizabeth WHEELER2, Jesse G.1). Born on 8 May 1869. David C. Or G? died on 2 Feb 1919; he was 49. Buried in First Baptist Church Cemetery Campobello South Carolina       . He was never married.

 

51. Samuel Staggs (Elizabeth WHEELER2, Jesse G.1).

 

Samuel Staggs killed John C. Chapman 26 Jan 1902 according to Spartanburg Co. Corners Report.  O R Edwards said he heard loud noises near his house at the cross roads and he saw John Chapman and Sam Staggs in a fistacuff.  Eugene N? separated them and Sam Staggs shot and killed John Chapman.  O R Edwards got T W McCart? and J B Morrow to go with him to ?  Eugene Norman said he was lying.  This Sam Staggs I believe is David Staggs the son of John Staggs who is buried at Friendship Baptist Church.  Mrs. Hightower called him littled David and she said he was accused of murdering Jess Chapman.  I have found it to be John Chapman and Samuel Staggs.  Samuel was supposed to have died in a State peniteniary.

 

52. Nathan Staggs (Elizabeth WHEELER2, Jesse G.1). Born on 7 Dec 1863. Nathan died on 11 Oct 1908; he was 44.5 Buried in Holly Spring Baptist Church Cemetery Spartanburg South Carolina   .

 

Nathan married Ellen Wingo. Born on 26 Nov 1868. Ellen died on 16 Jun 1945; she was 76.5
