The county is named after the Spartan Regiment. Known in history as the site of the Revolutionary War Battle of Cowpens. Spartanburg became an official county in 1785 and has played a large and colorful part in our nation's history. Details of these fascinating early days are available for your reading pleasure on our history pages where you will also find helpful tips on researching the early years of the county and the migration of our pioneer families.
