Several folks have written to ask why we haven't included the troop and
regimental rosters of CSA units as some county USGenWeb coordinators have.
Most simply, there were no units formed in Cherokee County South Carolina
because the county didn't exist at the time of the war. There were
veterans of the war who lived in what is now Cherokee County but, they served in
units which were formed under the authority of specific counties and
states. Most common were units from Spartanburg, Union, and York counties
in South Carolina and Rutherford County in North Carolina.
That said, that these veterans lived in what is now Cherokee County South
Carolina either before, during, or after the war makes them Cherokee County
veterans by geography, if not by political subdivision.
On March 26, 1989, Eddie L. Gorski prepared an abstract of pension
applications called South Carolina Confederate Soldier Pension
Act of 1919 For Cherokee County which is filed at the County
Public Library under catalog number SC Gen Ref 929 Gorin the history room. This page is only an abstract of
the names found in the text with units when identified. The
original document includes names, dates, units, campaigns, and ranks
when available.

Musician Thomas B. Bryant of Gaffney
and
Private Samuel T. Barrier of Gaffney served in Company G, 2nd North Carolina Volunteers.
Company G was primarily a Gastonia Company. G/2nd NC served in
garrison along the coast of South Carolina at Lands End.
These two men were the only men from Gaffney found
amongst the rosters of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Regiments of North Carolina
Volunteer Infantry.
Private Mitchell S. Lindsay of
Blacksburg
and
Private Albert J. Swartmont of Blacksburg served in Company G, 1st North Carolina
Volunteers. G/1st was primarily a Shelby and Rutherfordton
Company. The 1st North Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment was
among the first to land in Cuba.
These two men were the only men from Blacksburg found
amongst the rosters of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Regiments of North Carolina
Volunteer Infantry.
